How To Save Energy Around The Home
There are a multitude of ways to save energy around the home that will in the end be very beneficial to the environment.
At Megawatt Junction I like to write about anything and everything that has to do with greening up the environment, and the home is a vital part of where we can be conservationists.
Saving Energy on Cooling
1. Switch your ceiling fan to turn counter-clockwise in the summer, and in the winter make sure it’s running clockwise but at low speeds. This will distribute your cooling throughout the house much better.
2. Change your air filters on your furnace / ac unit once a year.
3. Setup an automatic thermostat in your house so that it goes lower while you’re away from home and while sleeping.
4. Block the sun from overheating your home by using blinds, drapes or shades. Also another option is tinting the exterior of the windows on the south side of your home where the most sunlight comes from.
Saving Energy On Heating
5. Limit the use of portable heaters in your house because they suck a lot of energy.
6. Keep your thermostat as close to the outside temperature as possible, depending on where you live you’ll want to look into high quality goose down comforters, you can read reviews about different types here.

7. Close the flue in your fireplace if you have one, also install glass doors over the fireplace to keep the heat from escaping your home.

9. Look for the National Fenestration Rating label stuck on windows when shopping for the proper windows for your home, this will tell you they are high quality and will keep energy inside.

11. Keep your fridge clean, the coils behind your fridge work more efficiently if you’re able to regularly keep them clean.
12. Use the economy mode of your dishwasher to save energy. This mode should keep your dishes clean but will also use 33% less energy than high power mode.
13. Grill out as often as you can in the summer (this one should be easy!) this will keep the heat of cooking outside your home and save on cooling costs.
14. The dryer will often over dry your clothes and you can make sure they don’t by drying them partly in the dryer and then hanging them to dry the rest of the way! This saves a ton of energy!
15. Shop for energy efficient appliances. There can’t be enough said about advances in energy efficiency in the appliance department, especially your furnace, fridge and stove!

Are Hydroelectric Dams Worth it?
The first mega-dam was built in the year 1936 and it is known as the Hoover Dam. This dam was built on the Colorado River located in Black Canyon. The dam stood a height of 221 m and it was three times the size of the Statue of Liberty in New York. The Hoover Dam was known as the largest dam in the world. It was built with very high and strong concrete walls holding back the waters of Lake Mead . This dam was considered to be heavy enough to bend the crust of the earth. Nine more large dams were built to divert the Colorado River’s water into three states which are Arizona, Nevada, and southern California. This is what led to fueling the growth of major cities and helping to turn the dry West into a lush green garden.
The main purpose of these mighty dams were first to improve the human quality of life by giving good clean drinking water to populations and to support the thriving economic growth by diverting the water for power, ship and boat navigation, flood control, and irrigation to help farmers grow crops. Some people still argue that the many promised benefits of dams have still not been materialized. Hydroelectric dams are cost-effectiveness of hydro-power. Technical solutions can eliminate may problems that have been associated with the hydroelectric dams, like dredging or mixing, but these solutions can be quite expensive in costs. The government and water engineering management planners still have yet to fins the full solutions of how to sustainably manage the increasing demands.
